How to Play a Ranger in D&D 5e

If your table uses Tasha’s optional class features, Fey Wanderer becomes a top-tier choice.
Beast Master (Player’s Handbook / Tasha’s Revision)
The original Beast Master is mechanically broken—your companion doesn’t scale, dies easily, and competes with your action economy. If you want an animal companion, use the Tasha’s Cauldron revision (Primal Companion), which makes the beast actually functional by having it attack when you command it as a bonus action rather than requiring your action.
Building Your Ranger: Ability Scores
Dexterity is your primary stat for AC, attack rolls with finesse or ranged weapons, and initiative. Aim for 16-18 at character creation, maxing it to 20 by level 8.
