Aasimar Cleric 2024 Build: Domains, Stats, and Spells

Revised 2024 D&D (5.5e)

From the Crit Hit Ceramics editorial team. See our editorial standards for sourcing, corrections, and assisted-drafting practices.

A revised 2024 Aasimar Cleric is a flexible divine caster with emergency healing, radiant and necrotic resistance, and a once-per-Long-Rest transformation chosen when it is activated. Put Wisdom first, choose Protector or Thaumaturge as the Cleric’s Divine Order, and match Life, Light, Trickery, or War Domain to the role the party needs.

Rules edition: Revised 2024 D&D (5.5e). The revised Aasimar has no permanent Protector, Scourge, or Fallen subrace. Those names belong to older rules. Celestial Revelation instead lets you choose Heavenly Wings, Inner Radiance, or Necrotic Shroud each time you transform.

Aasimar Cleric Quick Build

Choice Recommendation Why
Primary ability Wisdom Drives prepared Cleric spells, spell attacks, save DC, and several class features.
Secondary ability Constitution Supports Hit Points and Concentration saves.
Divine Order Thaumaturge for casting; Protector for martial armor The choice defines whether the build emphasizes spell utility or front-line equipment.
Background Hermit, Guide, Farmer, Acolyte, Guard, or Scribe Each can improve Wisdom; choose the complete feat-and-skill package.
Domain Life, Light, Trickery, or War All four appear in the revised Player’s Handbook and support distinct roles.
Celestial Revelation Choose at activation Wings, radiance, and fear are tactical options, not permanent subraces.

Revised Aasimar Traits

The revised Aasimar may be Small or Medium, has a Speed of 30 feet, and has Darkvision to 60 feet. Ability-score increases do not come from the species; the background supplies them.

Celestial Resistance grants resistance to Radiant and Necrotic damage. This can matter in adventures involving celestials, undead, and certain divine or deathly effects, but it does not provide resistance to all spell damage.

Healing Hands is a Magic action that touches a creature and restores a number of d4s equal to Proficiency Bonus, once per Long Rest. It is useful emergency or between-fight healing without a spell slot. It is not a Cleric spell and does not automatically receive bonuses that apply only when a healing spell is cast.

Light Bearer teaches the Light cantrip using Charisma. A Cleric may already have access to Light, so use the species version and a different Cleric cantrip rather than learning the same cantrip twice.

Celestial Revelation arrives at character level 3 and transforms the Aasimar as a Bonus Action once per Long Rest. Choose an option each time it is used: Heavenly Wings for flight, Inner Radiance for a dangerous aura, or Necrotic Shroud for fear. Each form can also add its specified extra damage once on each of the character’s turns after dealing damage with an attack or spell. Use the current species text for the exact damage and area.

Ability Scores and Background

Wisdom is the Cleric’s primary ability and should usually begin at 16 or 17 after background increases. Constitution 14 is a dependable target for Hit Points and Concentration. Dexterity 14 suits medium armor; a Protector build using heavy armor may instead need enough Strength for its selected armor and weapon plan. Charisma does not power revised Aasimar revelation damage or Cleric spellcasting, so raise it only for the concept or social skills.

A practical point-buy caster array before background increases is 8 Strength, 14 Dexterity, 14 Constitution, 10 Intelligence, 15 Wisdom, and 10 Charisma. A Protector can move points from Dexterity into Strength. Apply a compatible background’s +2 to Wisdom and +1 to Constitution, Dexterity, Strength, or Charisma as the build requires.

Hermit can improve Wisdom and Constitution and supplies the Healer Origin feat. Guide can improve Wisdom, Constitution, or Dexterity and adds Magic Initiate (Druid). Farmer supports Wisdom and Constitution with Tough. Acolyte is thematic and includes Magic Initiate (Cleric), though its added magic may overlap. Guard supplies Alert, while Scribe provides flexible skills through Skilled.

Divine Order at Level 1

Protector grants training with Heavy armor and proficiency with Martial weapons. Choose it when the character will actually use the armor or weapons. It is a Cleric class option and is unrelated to the older “Protector Aasimar” subrace.

Thaumaturge adds a Cleric cantrip and adds Wisdom to Intelligence (Arcana or Religion) checks, with the minimum described by the feature. It is the natural choice for a spell-focused or knowledge-focused Cleric.

Choosing a Revised Cleric Domain

Life Domain

Life is the direct healing and restoration option. Revised Disciple of Life applies under its exact timing, so do not assume Healing Hands benefits; Healing Hands is a species trait, not a spell. Life suits a party that needs dependable recovery, but the Cleric should still use control, defense, and damage when those prevent more harm than healing after it occurs.

Light Domain

Light adds Fire and Radiant offense plus defensive Warding Flare. It matches the Aasimar theme without requiring Heavenly Wings or Inner Radiance every time. The revised domain begins at Cleric level 3 and includes updated Domain Spells and subclass features.

Trickery Domain

Trickery supports infiltration, misdirection, and ally assistance. The revised version can apply Blessing of the Trickster to the Cleric and makes Invoke Duplicity easier to use. An Aasimar serving an unconventional deity can be as coherent as a traditional radiant healer.

War Domain

War supports weapon-and-spell play and works naturally with the Protector Divine Order. The revised domain can use Channel Divinity for certain Domain Spells under improved conditions. Wisdom remains important even when the character carries a martial weapon.

Level-by-Level Priorities

Levels 1–2

Choose Divine Order at level 1 and prepare a balanced spell list rather than only healing. At level 2, Channel Divinity provides Turn Undead and Divine Spark. Divine Spark can heal or harm, giving the base Cleric a flexible use even when the subclass is not yet selected.

Levels 3–5

At character level 3, Celestial Revelation and the Cleric Domain both arrive. Because revelation uses a Bonus Action, plan the first round instead of assuming every feature can start at once. At Cleric level 4, increasing Wisdom is usually the default. At level 5, third-level spells change encounter planning; verify every spell from the revised list.

Levels 6–10

Channel Divinity uses increase, the domain develops, and Blessed Strikes arrives at level 7 with a choice between a weapon-oriented and cantrip-oriented benefit. At level 10, revised Divine Intervention becomes a dependable class feature rather than the old percentile roll. Read its current spell and component limits before relying on it.

Celestial Revelation Tactics

  • Heavenly Wings: choose flight when terrain, vertical access, or safety from ground threats matters. Flight does not protect Concentration by itself.
  • Inner Radiance: choose the aura when enemies will remain close and allies can avoid the danger. Position carefully because the effect is not selective in every respect.
  • Necrotic Shroud: choose fear when disrupting nearby enemies is more useful than movement or area damage. The saving throw uses the species feature’s ability and DC, not the Cleric spell save DC unless they happen to match.

The form is chosen at activation, so the same character can use wings in one adventure and Necrotic Shroud in another. This flexibility is one of the biggest differences from older Aasimar variants.

Spell Preparation Principles

Prepare spells for several jobs: concentration support, emergency healing, non-concentration offense, defense, condition removal, and exploration. Clerics can change prepared spells after a Long Rest, so adapt to known threats. Do not treat healing as the only contribution; preventing actions or ending a threat can save more Hit Points.

Check revised spell text. Familiar names may have changed casting time, range, Concentration, damage, or upcasting. In particular, do not copy a 2014 rotation into a revised sheet from memory.

Common Rules Mistakes

  • Selecting Protector, Scourge, or Fallen as a permanent revised subrace.
  • Adding old +2 Charisma and variant ability bonuses to a revised character.
  • Using Healing Hands as a Bonus Action; it is a Magic action in the revised species.
  • Adding Life Domain spell-healing bonuses to Healing Hands without a rule that applies to it.
  • Choosing one Celestial Revelation form permanently instead of at each activation.
  • Giving an Aasimar Cleric two Light cantrips instead of choosing another Cleric cantrip.
  • Using 2014 spell wording on a revised character sheet.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best domain for a revised Aasimar Cleric?

Life is the clearest healing choice, Light emphasizes radiant and fire offense, Trickery supports infiltration, and War supports weapons. The best domain is the one that fills the party’s missing role.

Is Protector Aasimar still current?

No. Protector Aasimar is a legacy variant from older rules. The revised species can choose Heavenly Wings whenever Celestial Revelation is activated, without being permanently assigned to a Protector subrace.

Does an Aasimar make a Cleric heal more?

Not automatically. Healing Hands adds one separate healing resource, but Cleric spell healing still follows the spells and class features that apply to it.
