Kobold Artificer: Tactical Cunning Meets Magic

Kobolds and artificers were made for each other. A kobold artificer takes the species’ legendary trap-craft and channeled cunning, fuses it with the artificer’s magical invention system, and creates something genuinely dangerous—a character who leverages preparation and positioning to outthink opponents several times their size.

When your Steel Defender tanks damage meant for you, the Meatshield Ceramic Dice Set becomes essential for tracking those crucial hit points.

Why Kobold Works for Artificer

Kobolds from Volo’s Guide to Monsters (and later updated in Monsters of the Multiverse) bring several traits that synergize naturally with the artificer class. Pack Tactics gives you advantage on attack rolls when an ally is within 5 feet of your target—essential for an artificer who often enters melee with tools like the Battle Smith’s Steel Defender or the Armorer’s Guardian armor. Grovel, Cower, and Beg provides a bonus action control option that can save your party in tight situations.

The real magic happens when you combine kobold ingenuity with artificer infusions. Your small size means you can ride your Steel Defender as a mount, turning you into a mobile artillery platform. Your natural affinity for traps and mechanisms translates perfectly into understanding magical devices and crafting wondrous items.

Legacy vs. Monsters of the Multiverse

The original Volo’s kobold came with Sunlight Sensitivity, which imposed disadvantage on attacks and Perception checks in bright light. This was mechanically challenging but thematically appropriate. The Monsters of the Multiverse version removes this penalty and adjusts Pack Tactics to work only once per turn, making kobolds more balanced but less distinctive. Discuss with your DM which version fits your campaign—the original creates more interesting roleplay challenges, while the updated version is mechanically smoother.

Core Artificer Mechanics for Kobolds

Artificers are half-casters who gain power through magical item creation rather than raw spellcasting. You prepare spells like a wizard but can cast them using tools as a focus. This makes Intelligence your primary ability score, which works well for kobolds who traditionally rely on brains over brawn.

Key artificer features that benefit from kobold traits include Infuse Item (which lets you create magical items starting at 2nd level), Tool Expertise (doubling your proficiency with tools), and Flash of Genius (adding your Intelligence modifier to ability checks and saves for yourself or nearby allies). Your small size doesn’t hinder any artificer abilities, and Pack Tactics helps offset the lower attack bonuses from your small frame.

Best Artificer Specialist Choices

Battle Smith

Battle Smith is the strongest mechanical choice for a kobold artificer. Your Steel Defender serves as both your Pack Tactics partner and your mount. At 3rd level, you can ride this mechanical companion into battle, granting you mobility while keeping an ally adjacent for advantage on attacks. The Battle Smith also lets you use Intelligence for attack and damage rolls with magic weapons, eliminating your need for Strength or Dexterity.

Take the Mounted Combatant feat at 4th level if allowed, or save it for 8th level otherwise. This gives you advantage on melee attacks against unmounted creatures smaller than your mount (which is most things), stacks with Pack Tactics in situations where it matters, and lets you redirect attacks from your Steel Defender to yourself—useful since you’ll likely have higher AC with artificer armor options.

Armorer

Armorer transforms your armor into your spellcasting focus and grants you two armor models: Guardian (defensive tank) and Infiltrator (mobile striker). For kobolds, Infiltrator armor is particularly appealing because it eliminates disadvantage on Stealth checks and increases your walking speed to 30 feet (matching medium creatures). The Lightning Launcher gives you a reliable ranged attack using Intelligence.

Guardian armor works if you want to play against type—a tiny kobold in heavy armor with Thunder Gauntlets that impose disadvantage on enemy attacks against your allies. It’s mechanically sound and creates memorable roleplay moments.

Artillerist

Artillerist gives you an Eldritch Cannon at 3rd level that can serve as either a Tiny object you carry or a Small walking turret. The Force Ballista option provides consistent damage while you stay at range, and the cannon can serve as your Pack Tactics ally when in walking turret form. This specialist is less kobold-specific but perfectly functional, especially if you want to emphasize the “mad inventor” archetype.

Alchemist

Alchemist is the weakest artificer specialist mechanically, and kobolds don’t particularly shore up its deficiencies. Experimental Elixir provides random buffs that don’t synergize with kobold traits, and the subclass focuses on support over the tactical advantages kobolds naturally gravitate toward. Skip this unless your DM allows the 2024 PHB artificer updates or significant homebrew buffs.

Ability Score Priority and Stats

Intelligence comes first—it powers your spellcasting, your infusions, and (for Battle Smith) your attacks. Aim for 16+ at character creation after racial bonuses. The Monsters of the Multiverse version lets you place a +2 and +1 wherever you want, making 16 Intelligence trivial. With point buy, go 15 Intelligence, add your +2, and you’re at 17—bump it to 18 at 4th level.

Constitution comes second. You’re a d8 hit die class with medium armor (or heavy for Armorer), so you need decent hit points. Target 14 Constitution at minimum.

Dexterity matters for initiative, AC (unless you’re an Armorer in heavy armor), and Stealth. Aim for 12-14. Strength can be dumped entirely—artificers have no use for it.

Wisdom affects Perception, which is important for avoiding ambushes (especially if you’re using the Volo’s kobold with disadvantage in daylight). If you can spare the points after Intelligence and Constitution, 12 Wisdom is nice but not essential.

Charisma is your dump stat unless you’re building for a specific roleplay concept. Grovel, Cower, and Beg doesn’t use your Charisma modifier, so it’s mechanically safe to leave at 8.

Recommended Feats for a Kobold Artificer

Mounted Combatant

If you’re a Battle Smith, Mounted Combatant turns your Steel Defender into an even better tactical asset. Advantage on attacks against unmounted creatures, ability to redirect attacks from your mount to yourself, and protecting your mount from area effects make this essential for the riding-your-robot-dog build.

War Caster

War Caster gives you advantage on Constitution saves to maintain concentration and lets you cast spells as opportunity attacks. Artificers rely heavily on concentration spells like Faerie Fire, Heat Metal, and Haste. This feat keeps your best spells running through damage.

The Regal Regent Ceramic Dice Set captures the dignified authority a kobold artificer commands when their carefully laid plans come together perfectly.

Resilient (Constitution)

Alternative to War Caster if you have an odd Constitution score. This rounds it up and gives you proficiency in Constitution saves, making you extremely difficult to disrupt. Both War Caster and Resilient are defensive feats—pick whichever matches your stats and playstyle better.

Alert

Kobolds traditionally rely on ambush tactics and avoiding being ambushed themselves. Alert gives you +5 to initiative and prevents you from being surprised. Going first means getting your Steel Defender or Eldritch Cannon into position before enemies act.

Fey Touched

Fey Touched increases Intelligence and grants you Misty Step plus one 1st-level divination or enchantment spell. Misty Step gives you emergency mobility (critical for a Small creature with reduced speed if using Volo’s kobold rules), and Gift of Alacrity or Bless adds excellent utility.

Recommended Backgrounds

Guild Artisan

Guild Artisan gives you proficiency with artisan’s tools and Insight, plus the Guild Membership feature for accessing guild resources. This fits the artificer’s crafting focus mechanically and the kobold’s communal nature thematically. You’re a member of a tinkers’ guild or engineering collective.

Clan Crafter (SCAG)

Similar to Guild Artisan but more dwarven-focused by default—easy to reflavor as a kobold crafters’ warren. Gives you expertise with one set of artisan’s tools, doubling your proficiency bonus. Combined with artificer’s Tool Expertise at 6th level, you become absurdly good with your chosen tools.

Urchin

Urchin reflects a kobold who survived in hostile environments (like cities where kobolds are kill-on-sight). Stealth and Sleight of Hand proficiencies complement Pack Tactics, and the City Secrets feature gives you knowledge of urban passages—perfect for a trap-maker who knows how to use terrain.

Sage

Sage gives you Arcana and History proficiencies, representing a kobold scholar obsessed with magical research and ancient artifacts. The Researcher feature helps you access libraries and records, useful for campaigns involving lost magical knowledge or legendary items.

Far Traveler (SCAG)

Far Traveler works for a kobold from distant lands or the Underdark, bringing strange inventions to the surface world. Insight and Perception proficiencies help offset any Wisdom deficits, and All Eyes on You creates roleplay opportunities for a distinctive character.

Infusion Recommendations

Artificer infusions define your out-of-combat power. Focus on infusions that enhance your strengths rather than patch weaknesses.

Enhanced Defense on your armor is essential—+1 AC (eventually +2) matters when you’re in melee. Repulsion Shield pairs well with this for Battle Smiths, pushing enemies away and preventing them from surrounding you and your Steel Defender.

Enhanced Weapon (or Enhanced Arcane Focus) improves your attack accuracy. Battle Smiths should infuse their weapon early; Armorers and Artillerists benefit more from Enhanced Arcane Focus to boost spell attack rolls.

Replicate Magic Item offers incredible versatility. Bag of Holding solves carrying capacity issues for Small characters. Sending Stones enable long-distance coordination (perfect for Pack Tactics ambushes). Goggles of Night eliminate darkvision problems for party members.

Mind Sharpener at 10th level maintains concentration on your best spells automatically up to four times per day. This rivals War Caster for keeping Haste or Heat Metal running through damage.

Playing a Kobold Artificer

In combat, leverage Pack Tactics by positioning near allies or your Steel Defender. Lead with crowd control spells like Faerie Fire (grants advantage to everyone, not just you) or Web, then use your action for weapon attacks with advantage. Your bonus action goes to commanding your Steel Defender, activating your Eldritch Cannon, or using Grovel, Cower, and Beg if you need to impose disadvantage on enemy attacks.

Out of combat, you’re the party’s magical item expert. Use your extensive tool proficiencies to solve non-combat challenges—Smith’s Tools to repair metal structures, Thieves’ Tools to disarm traps, Tinker’s Tools to create small mechanical devices. Your Flash of Genius feature can save allies from failed ability checks or saving throws, so position yourself centrally.

Roleplay-wise, lean into the kobold’s communal nature and respect for dragons. Your artificer abilities represent your warren’s collective knowledge—you’re not a lone genius, you’re carrying generations of kobold ingenuity. Consider giving your Steel Defender draconic features, or theme your infusions as dragon-scale armor enhancements. Your Grovel, Cower, and Beg ability reflects tactical feinting, not actual cowardice—it’s a calculated move to create openings.

Most artificers accumulate enough infusion rolls and crafting checks that the 10d6 Assorted Ceramic Dice Set handles your damage dice needs without extra sorting.

The real strength of a kobold artificer lies in how they weaponize preparation. By stacking magical items, controlling space, and outmaneuvering stronger foes, you transform what looks like a liability on paper into a character that consistently punches above their weight.
