Rules edition: This guide pairs the legacy Githzerai from Mordenkainen’s Tome of Foes with the 2014 Sorcerer. The Githzerai in Monsters of the Multiverse has revised traits. Choose one version and do not combine their features. Tasha’s optional Customizing Your Origin rules can change legacy ability-score increases if your DM allows them.

What the legacy Githzerai adds

The legacy Githzerai increases Wisdom by 2 and Intelligence by 1, not Charisma. Its strongest Sorcerer benefits come from defense and utility: Mental Discipline gives advantage on saves against being charmed or frightened, Psychic Resilience grants resistance to psychic damage, and Githzerai Psionics provides spells. You know Mage Hand, which is invisible when cast through this trait. Starting at character level 3, you can cast Shield once per long rest; at level 5, you can cast Detect Thoughts once per long rest. Wisdom is the spellcasting ability for these racial spells.

That free Shield is valuable for a Sorcerer with a d6 Hit Die and no armor proficiency. It is only one use per long rest, though, and the racial spell uses Wisdom. Learning Shield as a Sorcerer spell gives you more castings using Charisma and your spell slots, if you want to spend one of your limited spells known on it. The racial Detect Thoughts is likewise a separate use from any class or subclass spell you know.

Ability scores and early choices

Charisma remains your main score because it sets your 2014 Sorcerer spell save DC and spell attack modifier. Constitution improves hit points and helps you maintain concentration; Dexterity helps your Armor Class and initiative. The legacy Githzerai’s fixed Wisdom and Intelligence increases do not directly improve Sorcerer spellcasting, but they also do not reduce your Charisma or cap its growth.

For example, with the 2014 standard array, you could assign Charisma 15, Dexterity 14, Constitution 13, Wisdom 12, Intelligence 10, and Strength 8 before species increases. The legacy traits make Wisdom 14 and Intelligence 11, leaving Charisma at 15. If your DM permits Tasha’s optional origin rules, you may be able to reassign the +2 and +1 to better fit the character; that is an optional rule, not the default legacy Githzerai trait.

At Sorcerer level 1, choose spells that cover different jobs because the 2014 Sorcerer learns a limited number of spells rather than preparing a fresh list each day. An attack-roll spell can help when an enemy’s saving throws are strong; a defensive or utility spell can remain useful across many encounters. Your Sorcerous Origin arrives at level 1 under the 2014 rules. Draconic Bloodline offers added durability, while Aberrant Mind from Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything strongly matches the Githzerai’s psionic theme. Check the selected subclass’s source and features with your DM.

Use your defenses without wasting actions

Shield is a reaction, so you can cast it when an attack would hit you and potentially turn that hit into a miss. Decide whether to use the racial once-per-long-rest casting or reserve it for another dangerous moment. The spell does not prevent damage from effects that require a saving throw. Mental Discipline helps against the charmed and frightened conditions but does not grant immunity; Psychic Resilience applies to psychic damage and does not reduce other damage types.

Keep distance from enemies that threaten your concentration. Use cover and let tougher allies hold a frontline when possible. A defensive reaction can buy time, but it does not replace positioning or Constitution. At Sorcerer level 2, Font of Magic adds Sorcery Points; at level 3, Metamagic lets you shape spell use. Choose options that support your preferred role and remember that Sorcery Points and spell slots are limited resources.

Subclass and roleplay directions

A Githzerai Sorcerer can explore tension between disciplined training and magic that arises innately. That tension need not mean the character is reckless or that all Githzerai share one personality. Decide whether the character treats their magic as another discipline, a threat to control, or a power their community misunderstands. Their history, teacher, and relationship with Limbo can provide hooks without deciding the character’s beliefs in advance.

Aberrant Mind suits a character whose magic and psionic identity overlap; its subclass spells and features are separate from Githzerai Psionics, so compare the full lists before spending a Sorcerer spell known on something you already receive. Draconic Bloodline can emphasize resilience and ancestry. Wild Magic instead leans into unpredictable power, which can create an intentional contrast with Githzerai discipline. No origin is mandatory: choose the one whose features and story you want to play.

Feats and progression

At Sorcerer levels 4, 8, 12, 16, and 19, the 2014 class gains an Ability Score Improvement. Raising Charisma improves offensive spell reliability; improving Constitution can help survivability and concentration. War Caster may suit a character who often concentrates in danger, but it is optional and should be weighed against an ability increase. Feats and optional rules depend on the books your table uses.

Multiclassing can add new tools but delays Sorcerer features and spell progression. The 2014 Sorcerer multiclass prerequisite is Charisma 13. Consider a multiclass only when its specific benefit is worth the slower access to higher-level spells and class features.
