Artificer Invention Ideas for the Revised 2025 Class

Revised 2025 Artificer (5.5e)

From the Crit Hit Ceramics editorial team. See our editorial standards for sourcing, corrections, and assisted-drafting practices.

The safest Artificer invention ideas use official mechanics and change the presentation. Pick a revised Replicate Magic Item plan, spell, Tinker’s Magic object, tool use, or subclass feature first; then describe how this particular Artificer built it. Homebrew mechanics should be a separate DM-approved step.

Rules edition: Revised 2025 Artificer for 5.5e from Eberron: Forge of the Artificer. The current class uses Replicate Magic Item plans, not legacy infusions.

Four Ways to Make an Invention

Method Rules source Permission needed
Reflavor a spell Prepared Artificer spell No mechanical change; tell the table what it looks like.
Reflavor a replicated item Known Replicate Magic Item plan Keep the item’s statistics, prerequisites, and limits.
Create temporary gear Tinker’s Magic Choose an item the feature allows and track its duration.
Design new mechanics DM-approved homebrew Required before the invention enters play.

Replicated-Item Concepts

  1. Folding extradimensional tool chest: a Bag of Holding plan styled as nested brass drawers.
  2. Pressure-bubble collar: a Cap of Water Breathing built into a neck seal.
  3. Paired whisper relays: Sending Stones presented as tuned crystal coils.
  4. Arcane calibration lens: a Wand of the War Mage built as a sighting instrument.
  5. Recoil-cycling crossbow: use the revised Repeating Shot item and preserve its exact statistics.
  6. Spatial-return boots: use Boots of the Winding Path as marked anchor plates.
  7. Emergency glider rig: use the statistics of an eligible mobility plan, not improvised free flight.
  8. Portable archive: style a storage or communication plan as indexed memory slates.

Spell Inventions

  1. Cure Wounds applicator: a runed brace or alchemical injector; the spell still uses its normal action, range, and slot.
  2. Grease capsule: a pressurized vial; the spell still creates the listed area and duration.
  3. Faerie Fire projector: powdered luminous motes; Concentration still applies.
  4. Detect Magic compass: rotating needles respond while the spell operates under its normal rules.
  5. Web launcher: spring-driven canisters deliver the spell without changing save DC or area.
  6. Heat Metal induction clamp: the device is flavor; targets, Concentration, and Bonus Actions follow the spell.
  7. Enhance Ability harness: interchangeable modules represent the selected benefit.
  8. Invisibility shroud: mirrored thread bends light but does not exceed the spell’s target and duration.

Tinker’s Magic Field Gear

  1. Self-spooling rope cartridge: temporary Rope fabricated when the party suddenly needs a line.
  2. Compact grappling head: a Grappling Hook assembled from folding prongs.
  3. Scatter bearings: Ball Bearings dispensed from a wrist canister.
  4. Instant signal kit: permissible adventuring gear styled for smoke, sound, or markings.

Tinker’s Magic creates only gear permitted by the feature, uses a Magic action while Tinker’s Tools are in hand, has uses tied to Intelligence modifier, and makes items that last until the next Long Rest. Do not use flavor to smuggle a weapon, spell effect, or expensive permanent object into the gear list.

Subclass Presentation Ideas

  1. Alchemist: color-coded distillation ampoules with visible reaction stages.
  2. Armorer: modular armor plates whose runes rotate between models.
  3. Artillerist: an Eldritch Cannon presented as a walking lantern, carved totem, or hovering geometric frame.
  4. Battle Smith: a Steel Defender assembled from salvage meaningful to the party.
  5. Cartographer: maps that physically refold as routes, portals, or hazards change.

Write a One-Card Invention Spec

  • Name: what the inventor calls it.
  • Rules identity: exact spell, item, class feature, or gear object.
  • Activation: Action, Bonus Action, Reaction, or passive.
  • Resource: slot, charge, use, attunement, Concentration, or active-item limit.
  • Appearance: materials, sound, smell, motion, and maker’s mark.
  • Failure appearance: how a miss or successful save looks without adding a new penalty.

When an Idea Becomes Homebrew

An invention becomes homebrew when it changes damage, range, action type, targets, uses, duration, attunement, Concentration, item tier, or another rule. Present the DM with the official baseline and one requested change. That makes the balance question clear.

For designing new mechanics, use the Artificer homebrew invention guide. For the current plan system, use the revised Artificer build guide.

Common Mistakes

  • Calling a 2025 plan an infusion.
  • Reflavoring an item and quietly removing attunement or charges.
  • Letting a spell-shaped gadget avoid spellcasting rules.
  • Using Tinker’s Magic to fabricate gear outside its allowed scope.
  • Introducing homebrew during play before the DM reviews it.
  • Describing every failure as the device breaking permanently.
