Drow Bard Build (2024 Rules): Elf Lineage and Bard Guide

2024 Elf species (Drow lineage) and 2024 Bard class. The 2014 Drow was a separate legacy species with different traits, including Sunlight Sensitivity and fixed ability-score increases; do not carry those traits into this build.

A Drow Bard is a Charisma-focused performer, negotiator, and spellcaster with a lineage that brings extra magic and exceptional darkvision. This guide uses the 2024 Elf species with the Drow lineage and the revised Bard class; Drow is a lineage choice, not a separate 2024 species.

Rules edition: 2024 Elf species (Drow lineage) and 2024 Bard class. The 2014 Drow was a separate legacy species with different traits, including Sunlight Sensitivity and fixed ability-score increases; do not carry those traits into this build.

What the Drow Lineage Adds

The 2024 Drow is an Elf lineage. It extends your Darkvision to 120 feet and gives you the Dancing Lights cantrip. At character levels 3 and 5, you gain Faerie Fire and Darkness, each always prepared and usable once without a spell slot after a Long Rest; you can also cast them with spell slots of the appropriate level. Choose Intelligence, Wisdom, or Charisma as the spellcasting ability for these lineage spells when you select the lineage. Charisma is a natural choice for a Bard.

The revised lineage does not include the 2014 Drow’s Sunlight Sensitivity, +2 Dexterity, or +1 Charisma. Under 2024 character creation, your background supplies your ability-score increases. If you want a legacy Drow instead, use that source’s full package with your DM rather than combining selected old and new traits.

Build Around Charisma

Charisma improves your Bard spell attacks and save DC, and supports the character’s social role. Dexterity improves initiative, finesse weapon attacks, and Light Armor Class; Constitution adds hit points and helps maintain concentration. Intelligence and Wisdom still matter for exploration and saves, but do not spread your scores so thin that your key spells become unreliable.

Choose a background that supplies a useful Charisma increase and an origin feat suited to the campaign. Bards can select three skill proficiencies from a broad list, so coordinate with the party before doubling up on the same social or knowledge checks. Expertise arrives at level 2; reserve it for skills you expect to use often, such as Persuasion, Deception, Performance, or Insight.

Use the Revised Bard Features

The 2024 Bard begins with Bardic Inspiration and Spellcasting, gains Expertise and Jack of All Trades at level 2, and chooses a Bard subclass at level 3. Font of Inspiration arrives at level 5. Use the 2024 progression rather than the older Bard subclass level or feature wording.

Prepare spells for several jobs. A reliable attack cantrip, an area option, a control spell, and a defense or escape spell give you choices when a performance cannot solve the scene. Bardic Inspiration can support an ally’s important roll; use it before the party’s key attempt rather than waiting until the encounter is almost over. Remember that Faerie Fire and Darkness are concentration spells, so choose carefully if you also want to maintain another concentration effect.

Choose a College

College of Lore supports a curious storyteller who gathers secrets and knowledge. College of Glamour fits a performer who commands attention and protects allies through presence. College of Valor leans toward martial support, while College of Dance makes movement part of the Bard’s performance. Use the revised subclass version and check its features at the appropriate 2024 class levels.

Play the Drow Bard at the Table

Use Darkvision to navigate dark environments, but remember that it does not reveal color in darkness and cannot see through magical Darkness. Faerie Fire can help allies attack visible targets, while Darkness can obstruct enemies—but it can also block your own party’s sight. Discuss the plan before casting a large area-control spell.

For roleplay, decide whether your Drow Bard is shaped by the Underdark, a surface community, or a life between them. The character need not represent all Drow or follow a single religious or political tradition. Give them a personal reason to perform: to preserve family stories, to challenge prejudice, to earn a living, or to make a new home. For a focused character arc, see our Drow Bard roleplay guide.
